I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.

Our department has a significant interest in medical education. Several members are examiners for the ANZCA Primary and Final examinations, and teach on the Auckland regional registrar teaching sessions. The department has instructors in high-fidelity simulation, teaching on the ANZCA-supervised Emergency Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) course and our own local simulation sessions. Formal in-house teaching is provided fortnightly for vocational trainees and various members provide teaching to other departments within Waitemata DHB.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions are held regularly in the department. These include:
  • Weekly presentations by members of the department or invited speakers
  • Fortnightly journal club meetings
  • Regular morbidity and mortality meetings

The department organises various courses, conferences, and programmes. These include the North Shore PREP course, an intensive course held for both sittings of the ANZCA Primary Examination.

The department offers a Fellowship in Medical Education, with the fellow spending 25% of their time allocated to teaching activities within the department, organisation, and in collaboration with the University of Auckland.
WABT Award

The Waitemata Anaesthesia Best Teacher (WABT) Award is presented to the Consultant Anaesthetist deemed to be the best clinical teacher in the department for that training year, as selected by our SHOs, registrars, and fellows.
